Learning how to floss teeth is simple. A bit harder is making this simple oral hygiene practice a regular part of daily dental care. Finding a dental floss that you like is key to making this second step easier and reducing gingivitis, periodontal disease and even heart problems.

Dental floss comes in several varieties. There are waxed and unwaxed flosses, as well as some that have mint, or other flavors, and unflavored. Floss also comes in ribbon and string varieties and can be made from nylon or teflon fiber. Finding the type of floss that you like best will make it easier to remember to floss you teeth regularly.

Studies have been done to see if one kind of floss is better than another for reducing the incidence of gingivitis. Results have shown that the most important factor is simply flossing daily, not which type of floss is used. Since it comes down to personal preference, trying several types of floss, and finding the one you prefer, is what will be most effective for building this habit into your daily routine.

As far as how to floss teeth, this is the easy part. Simply take a piece of floss that is about eighteen inches long and hold it between the thumb and index finger of each hand. Gently slide it into the space between each of your teeth, and then draw it down the side of each tooth removing plaque and pulling out food particles.

Gently rub the floss against the gum as well. This will stimulate the gum and reduce gingivitis. When you are done, brush and rinse your mouth. The whole process takes only a few minutes, and is an investment of time that will pay off with fresher breath, healthier teeth and gums, and better health overall.
